My First 30 Days- A New Falakonian's Impression After a Month at the Job


Have you ever wanted to work somewhere so bad that you showed up to work early? As in, walked in there at 9 AM so confidently holding your laptop and ready to kick-start your career, ready for your first meeting, just to be told by your leader that you’re early? Two weeks early? Yes. #Awkward.

During the four years prior to working in Falak, I worked for three years in a not for profit youth organization, where I was constantly surrounded by young individuals who seem to always be on a mission to change the world, to make a difference and to make Bahrain a better place. United by our shared vision and belief in a higher purpose, we worked endlessly and tirelessly to achieve our end goals, we worked with values, principles and guidelines, and between explaining what is our BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) to new recruits and preparing for the five-days-long semi-annual planning conferences, we had a very strong organizational culture and a stronger team bond, something that kept on motivating me and driving me to be better, something I thought I will never have in another organization in Bahrain.

A couple of years ago, I accidently saw an Instagram post by Suhail Algosaibi, it was a picture of the team having a Q3 company retreat and they looked so happy and content, and it looked so similar to the organizational culture I grew to embrace. Needless to say, that was when I started stalking/following Suhail on Instagram, and, little by little, started falling in love with the company he is managing, making it a goal to one day be led by this person.

I have always wanted to be a consultant, I went to Business College with the goal to eventually be a consultant and open my own consultancy company, so when I saw an opening for a senior consultant position in Falak Consulting, with Suhail Algosaibi as the CEO, I spared no time thinking it through, completely ignoring the two-years’ experience required to apply for the position, and I sent my CV, following that, I prayed raka’atain to God, hoping to get my application through and a little miracle, for at least an interview. When I came in for my interview, the first thing I noticed was the BHAG sign on the wall, and that made me certain this place is where I want to work in. A couple of months later, I got a job offer, and I attempted to contain my enthusiasm so I gracefully left the office going to my car, where I group texted everyone I know the good news, tweeted about it, snapchatted it, called my mother, then sent an email to Suhail accepting the job offer.

I have been working in Falak Consulting for a month now, and so far, it was exactly as I expected it to be. For me, working in a company with strong ethics and awareness of their social responsibility is very important, and they played key factors when I leveraged the job offer at Falak over the other company I was offered to work at. Falak Consulting’s BHAG aims to impact 25 million people by 2024 through the Learn and Grow initiative, and have a set of guiding principles that the whole team comply to, the people working in Falak are called “team members” and our super special name is the “Falakonians”, where we have a “Falakonian way”. Not only that, but we only accept projects that are in-line with our purpose: To build stronger economies and happier societies.

Falak encourages innovation and creativity, and the team is always open for new ideas that make the place a better working environment and boosts the culture. For that, every day there is a daily huddle, which is a 15-minutes update meeting, to make sure everyone is on the same page and no one is stuck anywhere, during the meeting we recite one part of the “Falakonian way”, to remind ourselves of who we are and what are we doing. And every week, aside from the weekly meeting, we have a “BDMRC” (Business Development, Marketing, Research and Content) meeting where we discuss super-secret stuff, and a monthly “Investment Innovation Lab” where we discuss big crazy ideas, and think of ways to make it happen.

In the first month of my experience in Falak, I attended the quarterly company retreat where we reviewed our performance and sat our priorities for the coming quarter, and it made me truly feel like I am part of the decision making process in Falak, and that I was part of a big team and a bigger family.
